Perfect for when the travel bug kicks in, Vicarious Living is a weekly feature on the worlds best Travel Bloggers. With photos good enough to get lost in, it’s a good hit to get you by until you go travelling yourself.
This week is @kirstenalana, a former wedding photographer who now travels the world telling stories through her photos on Instagram. Kirsten takes absorbing photos of fascinating locations and writes captions to match, here are some of our favourites:
The @nationaltrust Chastleton House is on a narrow road in a stunning piece of property by a small village with subtlety rolling hills and trees that seem to be hundreds of years old but behind the main gate, it's all gorgeously preserved formality. It's a rare Jacobean country manor that was built between 1607 and 1612 by a prosperous wool merchant. Since it was kept in only one family until 1991, it remained essentially unchanged for nearly 400 years and is barely effected by the progress of the 21st century. I wasn't able to go inside but just staring at the outside took me back into my favorite Jane Austen novels and into the romance of shows like Downton Abbey. It was enough just to look. Hopefully one day I can return and go inside! #unexpectedGB
Home in London was the eclectic @mondrianldn which is quite new to the South Bank and sits right on the Thames in the Sea Containers development. One of its most striking features is the copper wall on the right in this photo that anchors the lobby and the hallway to the main dining room and bar. Most elements in the hotel suggest a nautical theme without being too literal and I also thought it seemed perfect for a James Bond film, which is why I waited for just the right moment so I'd be able to capture a man in a dark suit for this photo. I had a vision and the hotel is a great backdrop for photographers like me. #unexpectedGB
Trying to pack "all the essentials" for a weekend getaway with @dante8 and realizing I don't have all the essentials. After years of being nomadic I don't own the proper clothes and shoes for every season. Gonna have to work on that. In the meantime…I'm so excited to be going with my favorite travel partner and to finally visit Montauk for the first time! We're headed to @gurneysmontauk to see if we can #FallForMontauk and I know there will be bonfires, horseback riding & long walks on the beach involved.
My last full day in Italy has dawned clear and a bit cold but my spirits couldn't be higher with this view, an excellent cup of coffee and the sound of half a dozen languages flowing around me with church bells and seagulls creating a background chorus. I don't know when it happened but @spg managed to completely make me fall in love with Firenze, Venezia and the #spglife…
My @SPG friends recommended that I take the boat to Burano for the day to experience another part of life in and around Venezia…they could not have been more correct in knowing what I might want to see! Life here, in October, is bathed in sun but quiet and peaceful. The colors are almost blinding in their depth and the opportunities for photographs abound to the point that 15 minutes into my journey around the island, my phone died!! I had to find a local cafe to charge and to recharge from the creative overload. What a lovely lovely way to spend 1/2 of my last day in Italia. #spglife
Every time I fly back into NYC, I'm struck again by how awesome it is to live in a place so many millions move to or come to visit every year. To me, it's just the place where my love is and it's my office. When I see the Statue of Liberty or the skyline from my plane window, I realize it's a dream not everyone achieves. But you could: Change your office view for a vacation view! Share a photo of your office, mention @courtyardhotels & use #3forfree + #contest for the chance to win a 3-night trip to one of 25 U.S. cities like New York. If you win, come see me! #sp
#TBT to that time, a year ago this week, that I was in Croatia enjoying the Fall (or Autumn) colour in the most beautiful place I've ever been in my life with my friends @captainandclark @backpackerbrock and @bohemiantrails. I wish I could be back there now…and if there's a heaven, it must look something like this.
